“Orange the World”

• United Nations on the 25th of each month, and Zonta Says NO use the colour orange to bring awareness about the violence against women.

Beginning in Canada in 2022

• Orange Shirt Day on September 30th in Canada references a real orange shirt taken from a residential school survivor.

• The day’s aim is to raise awareness of the residential school system in Canada

• Wearing an orange shirt reminds individuals of the impact of residential schools still felt today

• It honours the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrates their resilience and affirms a commitment that every child matters.

The Use of Purple for Zonta Says NO & “Orange the World”

• Organizations such as women’s shelters, Violence Against Women (VAW), and transitional housing in both Canada and United States use purple to represent women who have experienced abuse and violence at the hands of another utilize the colour purple.

• Purple represents peace, courage, survival and honour women who continue to move forward.

• It is used during the month of November and Nov. 25th on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

• Propose that clubs may use the colours purple and orange together to overcome this obstacle, if you desire to do so.

“We are ambitious, yet grounded in the realities of the world we inhabit. We are at the pivotal moment where gender-based violence remains a stark and painful reality and child marriage statistics have taken steps backward due to the unstable post-pandemic world.

But, we will not back down as we continue our work and intensify our efforts to combat gender-based violence. Our voices and actions through the Zonta Says NO to Volence Against Women campaign will build not just a better world for women and girls, but a better world for all.”
